Background of the Study
The Nigerian banking sector plays a pivotal role in the country's economic development by providing financial services that facilitate investment, trade, and consumption. Over the years, the sector has undergone significant reforms, particularly in the areas of financial regulation, aimed at improving transparency, stability, and efficiency. These regulatory reforms have been critical in addressing the challenges faced by the banking sector, such as poor corporate governance, inadequate risk management, and low financial inclusion (Akintoye & Oyebanji, 2023). GTBank, one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks, has implemented various regulatory measures to ensure compliance with the central bank's directives and improve its financial performance.
Financial regulation in the Nigerian banking sector is primarily overseen by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which sets guidelines on capital adequacy, lending practices, and liquidity management. However, despite these regulations, the banking sector continues to face challenges such as non-performing loans (NPLs), fraudulent activities, and inadequate risk management systems (Ogunleye, 2024). Taraba State, where GTBank has a significant presence, faces unique challenges in the banking sector, including limited access to banking services, low financial literacy, and an underdeveloped economy. Analyzing how financial regulations impact the operations of GTBank in this context will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of regulatory policies and their role in the sustainability of banks operating in underserved regions.
Statement of the Problem
While financial regulations have been implemented to stabilize and enhance the performance of the Nigerian banking sector, there is limited research on how these regulations affect the operations of banks, particularly in rural areas such as Taraba State. GTBank, despite being one of Nigeria's most prominent banks, has faced challenges in adapting its operations to local conditions while complying with national regulations. These challenges include balancing profitability with regulatory requirements, managing credit risk, and maintaining customer trust in an economically underdeveloped region. The lack of detailed studies on the relationship between financial regulation and bank performance in this specific context highlights a gap in the literature, which this study aims to address.
